A moving checklist: what to do and when
By Brainy Planner · Updated October 14, 2026
Moving is easier when the work is spread across several weeks. Adjust this timeline to your move date and distance.
6-8 weeks before
- Set a budget and decide whether you will hire movers or move yourself.
- Request written quotes from movers, or reserve a truck.
- Start decluttering: sell, donate or discard what you will not take.
- Create a folder for moving paperwork and receipts.
4 weeks before
- Order packing supplies and start packing rarely used rooms.
- Notify your landlord or arrange the sale, and confirm key handover dates.
- Book time off work and arrange childcare or pet care for moving day.
2-3 weeks before
- Schedule disconnection at the old home and connection at the new one for utilities, internet and other services.
- Change your address with the postal service, banks, insurers, employer, subscriptions and government agencies as required where you live.
- Transfer or ask for medical, school and other records if needed.
1 week before
- Confirm the movers' arrival time and arrangements in writing.
- Pack an essentials box: medications, chargers, toiletries, basic tools, documents and a change of clothes.
- Defrost the freezer and clean as you empty rooms.
Moving day
- Do a walk-through of the old home before leaving and take photos of its condition.
- Check the inventory with the movers and keep important documents with you.
- Take meter readings if you need them for utilities.
First week in the new home
- Locate the main water shut-off, electrical panel and heating controls.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Unpack the essentials first, then room by room.
- Keep a record of appliance details, warranties and who to call for repairs.
